China dolls became popular in Germany around 1840. They are known for their glossy appearance and painted on hair. Bisque dolls are known for their realistic, matte finish and wore wigs made of human hair or mohair. They were extremely popular in France and Germany from the mid-nineteenth century to the turn of the twentieth century. These dolls often replicated grown-up, fashionable women but were intended for children. More contemporary porcelain dolls are designed specifically for collectors instead of children.
