Royal Dux Repair and Restoration
Founded in Duchov, Bohemia in 1860, the Royal Dux porcelain company’s official name was Duxer Porzellanmanufaktur. This company, which is now located in Dux, Czech Republic, specialized in porcelain statuary, large porcelain figures, Art-Nouveau-style busts and ornate vases. The vast number of productions created by Royal Dux over the years is nearly inconceivable; by 1938, they had already created 12,000 porcelain molds.
Royal Dux wares were mainly crafted in the genre of Copenhagen, Worcester and Sevrés and were made with terracotta, faience and majolica. Their ornate vases are easily recognizable thanks to three-dimensional figures climbing on the sides.
Royal Dux has had four distinct marks over the years due to numerous name changes. From 1860 to World War II, the company was named Duxer Porzellanmanufaktur, but often called Royal Dux. After World War II, the company was nationalized by the Soviet Union and renamed Duchosvsky Porcelain. Since returning to private ownership after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the company has produced pieces under the Royal Dux name. It is still in business today.
The most common and recognizable mark is a raised pink clay triangle. The pink clay is applied to the base of Royal Dux pieces and then fused together during firing, leaving virtually no gap between the pink triangle and the white clay of the piece. On the triangle are the words “Royal Dux Bohemia” around an oval with a letter impressed in the triangle. The letter changes over the years. At times, Bohemia changed to say “Made in Czechoslovakia.” Before World War I, the triangle remained unglazed. After World War I, pieces featured a high gloss triangle.
