Stangl Repair and Restoration

Johann Martin Stangl is the artist behind Stangl Pottery and the famous Stangl figurines. He began as a potter in 1910 at the Fulper Pottery in New Jersey, but left to work at the Haeger Pottery from 1915 to 1920, before returning to Fulper and eventually become company president. In 1929, once Stangl took over as president, he changed the company’s name to Stangl Pottery. While all ware started being marked with “Stangl” at this time, the name wasn’t officially changed until 1955. When Stangl died in 1972, the company was sold to Wheaton Industries. Production continued until 1978 when Pfaltzgraff Pottery purchased the Stangl trademark and the remaining inventory was liquidated.

Stangl is best known for its bird figurines and colorful, simple dinnerware. Stangl dinnerware was typically used as a casual alternative to more formal service. The Stangl mark features “Stangl” written inside an oval. For a single bird figurine, it includes a number. A double bird figurine includes a number plus the letter “D”. Most Stangl bird figurines also include the carver’s initials and the painter's signature.

The Stangl figurines were always hand painted. They remain sought after because of their lifelike characteristics. At Dean Schulefand & Associates, we understand that Stangl figurines are still very much coveted by collectors.
